Church of Santa Cruz

Local name: Igreja de Santa Cruz

The church of Santa Cruz was built in the first half XII century. The ancient object was declared a national monument. The heart of the Romanesque church is an unusual altar, which is not finished with any statue, and two amazing tombs of the first rulers of Portugal: Alfonso I the Conqueror and Sancho I. In the first half The building was completely restored by the order of King Manuel I. in the 16th century. In 2003 the temple was given the status of the National Pantheon.

A characteristic feature of the church are blue azulejos tiles. These decorations from a distance look very beautiful, but in reality they are so badly made that the ceramic factory that produced them refused to give its name. Damaged plaques were often replaced by others - not necessarily matching the rest.

The interior of the temple is decorated with powerful organs with fantastic Japanese works of art. The instrument consists of 4,000 pipes and only four people in the world can play it.
