Włocławek Cathedral

Local name: Katedra Włocławska

The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wloclawek attracts attention with beautiful polychromes made between 1900-1901 and slightly newer stained glass in the chancel by Józef Mehoffer. The temple is adorned with numerous sculptures, among which is made by Wit Stwosz himself in 1494 the tombstone of Bishop Peter of Bnin in red marble.

Other interesting monuments include the renaissance tombstones of the local bishops, the wooden statue of Our Lady of the early 15th century, the polychrome group of the Last Supper of 1505, the Great Tumski Cross from the beginning of the 17th century, the 1475 picture of the Assumption of the Mother of God, the seven- 1596 and 17th century baroque stalls. In addition to the listed monuments in the cathedral, you can see many other works of art as well as numerous gravestones.

Noteworthy are the beautiful side chapels, erected in stages around the church since the mid-15th century. Part of the chapel and porch was built only in the nineteenth century to get symmetry in the temple plan. There were also two church towers, initially reaching the roof, later elevated by two storeys. The history of the Wloclawek cathedral dates back to 1411, when it was consecrated.
