Basilica in Wiślica

Local name: Bazylika Wiślicka

The Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wiślica dates back to the 14th century. The relatively simple body of the church conceals the original interior, the nave supported on three slender, polygonal pillars. In the chancel there are remnants of Russian-Byzantine polychrome from the end of the 14th century.

The church in Wiślica was founded by Kazimierz the Great. It was one of several of his foundations, which he undertook in order to repent for the murder of the canon of Marcin Baryczka. They all have similar architecture. It is seen particularly well in the main nave, which is covered by a starboard vault supported on three pillars. From the east lies the narrower and lower chancel covered with a cross-ribbed vault.

In addition to the preserved fragments of polychromes made by the Orthodox Hayla monk from Przemysl in the Basilica of Wicki, you can see the relief of the so-called Madonna of the Ladies, before which he was praying for the reunification of the country at the time also the prince, Ladislaus the Short. On the outer wall above the entrance there is a bas-reliefed basilica depicting Kazimierz the Great offering to the Blessed Virgin Mary a collegiate church.
