House of Carl and Gerhard Hauptmann
Local name: Dom Carla i Gerharta Hauptmannów
The house of two German writers today houses a museum presenting a collection of memorabilia of famous artists. The permanent exhibition contains exhibits related to the life and work of the Hauptmann brothers, as well as a wonderful collection of landscapes dedicated to the Krkonoše Mountains before 1945. It includes, among others, paintings by Vlastimil Hoffman. Temporary exhibitions related to the region are also periodically presented.
The Hauptmann brothers bought a house in 1890, enchanted by the beauty of the Karkonosze valley while hiking in the surrounding mountains. The village cottage bought spontaneously at that time was rebuilt by them becoming a family home, and for Carl also a place where he lived to his last days. After his death in 1921, the house became a meeting place for a group of artists that was founded in Szklarska Poręba in the 19th century.
The People's House, as it was then called, was the site of numerous events related to local folklore. After the war, the building served as a residential building, and since 1995 it has been one of the branches of the Karkonosze Museum. The property is surrounded by a large, over a hundred-year-old Ghost Mountains park, which contains, among others, the grave of Carl Hauptmann.
