City walls

Local name: Mury obronne

The city walls in Stargard, one of the strongest fortifications in Poland, surround the oldest parts of the city. Their former length amounted to 2260 m. Because part of them was dismantled, only 1040 m survived to this day. The highest point of the walls reaches over 8 m. The best-preserved part can be admired next to Pyrzycka Gate.

The walls were built on former earth-woodworks which, in the 10th century, surrounded the gord located in this region. Its lower part of the height of 6 m was built in the 13th century of field stones. Because of new dangers and the introduction of firearms, the walls had to be modernized. They were extended with brick structures in the 15th century. Deep moats were also added, however, they are buried today and parks were created in their place.

The complex consists of not only walls but also other defensive objects. There are towers, roundel bastions, gates protecting the entrance to the city, and wicket gates which made it easier to get outside the walls. In the past, it also consisted of outposts. The ground floor of such outpost housed armory while the first was dedicated to the crew, and the second was used for observation.
