Władysław Orkan Ethnographic Museum
Local name: Muzeum Etnograficzne im. Władysława Orkana
Władysław Orkan Ethnographic Museum is located in wooden St. Mary Magdalene's Church. The exposition, presented on the tower's ground floor, is dedicated to the culture of Podhale and Zagórze mountaineers who live near Rabka-Zdrój. It consists of agricultural tools, folk costumes, instruments, items related to ceremonies including effigies of Turoń and stars carried by coral singers. It is also worth to take a look at the collection of folk toys made of wood and clay.
The wooden St. Mary Magdalene's Church was abandoned in 1908 after the construction of the new, brick church. After World War I, the Tatra Association took steps to establish a museum here. Their efforts were rewarded in 1936 and since that time it operates almost uninterruptedly. Władysław Orkan, glorifier of the Gorce Mountains and Podhale, chose himself as the patron of the facility. The exhibitions are dedicated to different aspects of life of the local community: shepherding, crafting, economy, art, and folk culture. There are folk costumes of Zagórze and Podhale mountainers, items used in houses and farms, and the shepherding equipment. Other exhibits include ceremonial objects and the collection of carved saints and glass paintings.Less
