Fort I - Łomża Fortress

Local name: Fort I - Twierdza Łomża

The concrete fort marked with the number I and located to the east is part of the Łomża Fortress. Originally, it was five forts built in the form of a circular fortress. Two earthworks (number IV and V) on the left bank of the Narew, near Łomża, and three (number I, II and III) on the right bank of the river, next to the town of Piątnica. Until now, the Forts in Piątnica and Fort No. IV on the road to Ostrołęka have been preserved.

The main builder of the forts erected in 1897-1909 was general Alexei Shoshin. The fortress was used by the tsarist army until 1909. Later it was also used by the Polish Army - during the fights in 1920 and during the September campaign.
