Bernardine church and monastery

Local name: Kościół i klasztor Bernardynów

Monastery and church of Bernardine in Opatow is one of the most important witnesses of the history of the city. Today Baroque architecture dates back to the beginning of the Middle Ages, and in its history can be traced the horrors of Tatar invasions and the years of Opatów's flourishing as one of the most important shopping centers in the region.

The monastery stands on Zmigród Hill. This is a place associated with the early days of Opatov. The parish church from the middle of the 11th century was transferred to the Bernardines in 1467. The parish moved to the collegiate church of St. Martin. From that time, the monks were reigning at the reign. They rebuilt their headquarters and fortified it with defensive walls. Their remains can still be seen near the church.

In 1502, the monastery defended itself four days before the Tatar invasion. The present appearance of the buildings owes a great reconstruction from the 18th century. The monastery eventually lost its gothic features and took on a baroque appearance. Its interior is decorated in rococo style. Much of this decoration has survived to this day. The church's oldest object is the crucifix hanging from the sacristy around 1400. It comes from the former parish church.
