"The gallows" by Xawery Dunikowski

Local name: "Szubienice" Dunikowskiego

Dunikowski's 'Szubienice' is a common name of the Monument of the Liberation of Warmia and Mazury which was previously called Monument of Gratitude to the Red Army. It consists of the two pylons which symbolize a triumphal arch. The figure of soldier, tank and scenes of World War II battles were carved on them. The elements of socialist realism, the hammer, and sickle - a symbol of the Soviet Union - work on the land and in an industry were also included.

The monument was made in 1954 as a symbol of gratitude to the Red army for freeing Olsztyn from the German occupation. It was made by Polish sculptor and painter Xawery Dunikowski which managed to survive captivity in Auschwitz concentration camp.

After 1989, propositions of removing or moving the monument were considered during the political transformation. Eventually, only names of the monument and square (former Red Army Square) were changed. Nowadays, the square serves as parking.
