Old Town

Local name: Stare Miasto

The Old Market Square is the main square of the Old Town, located in its very center. It is surrounded by tenement houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, which are decorated with neo-Renaissance and classicist facades. They house shops and restaurants. In the middle of the square the attention attracts the Old Town Hall, now housing the Regional Public Library.

The Market Square has a rectangular shape, and its history dates back to the 14th century, when it was the most important commercial square in the city. It’s function of the commercial space has continued without interruption until modern times.

The square and the surrounding tenements suffered great damage during the Second World War. They were rebuilt in the 1950s, but in a different shape than originally. Among others, the style of building facades, that previously had an eclectic form, was changed.
