Old Town Hall

Local name: Stary Ratusz

The Old Town Hall in Olsztyn was built in the late Gothic style, later it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. This building is the oldest seat of municipal and judicial authorities. In 1915 his role was taken over by the New Town Hall. On the outer walls of the building are located the sundials. Currently the building is housing the seat of the Regional Public Library. In the courtyard of the town hall there is a cafe.

The town hall is a three-wing structure and it's courtyard is closed by an arcaded gallery. The southern gothic wing with the entrance portal in the southern facade was the only one that was not plastered. On the other hand, fragments of Gothic decorations and the remains of the market hall - the window of the city scale - have been preserved on the ground floor. During the renovation in 2001, the floor burst under the working floorers, and revealed the cellars from the 14th century. Archaeological research revealed the remains of the hypocaustum, that is the medieval central heating furnace.

In the south-west wing there are medieval cellars with the highest historic value. After the end of World War II, they were covered with slag, as a result of which they are not available to the public.
