Copernicus Bench in Olsztyn is a bronze installation where tourists can sit and take a photo with the famous astronomer. Visitors can also say hello to their relatives because the monument is constantly monitored by the internet camera. The monument was unveiled in 2003 on the occasion of 650th anniversary of granting a town privileges to Olsztyn, and the 530th birthday of Copernicus.
The monument is located in the very center of Old Town, near the main gate of Castle of Warmian Bishops which was administered for a few years by Copernicus. It was built in the Center of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko. The author is award-winning Olsztyn's sculptor Urszula Szmyt.The silhouette of the astronomer was based on the Copernicus natural size. The items which the figure is holding are astrolabe and scroll of parchment. The interesting feature is the glowing and smoothed nose. It is said that rubbing it brings luck.Less
