Turbacz (1310m) is the tallest peak of the Gorce Mountains and central point of the vast massif. It consists of a rich network of tourist tracks. Its wooded summit is topped with an obelisk and cross. The large PTTK Refuge is located near the peak from which the beautiful panorama of the Tatra and Pieniny Mountains can be admired. The interior of the building presents the exhibition of the Cultural Center of Mountain Tourism. The longest in Poland and marked as red the Main Beskid Trail passes through Turbacz. The most popular tracks which lead to the top start at the foot of Turbacz in Nowy Targ.
The network of tracks - red, blue, green and yellow - allow exploring various ridges constituting the massif. During World War II and later, the slopes of Turbacz were a place of guerrilla warfare in which famous Józef Kuraś, noms-de-guerre "Fire", participated. Józef Tischner, saint and priest, said Mass on each Day of Mountain near the Chapel of Pope on the Wisielakówka Glade for many years.Writer Władysław Orkan in his novel "W Roztokach" explained the origin of the mountain's name: "...perhaps as a turban of fog, against rain, it is wrapping the bald head, or rather because it is always seen in everlasting turbation..."Less
