Town Hall in Morąg

Local name: Ratusz w Morągu

A Gothic building erected in 1444. Currently it houses a tourist information point and the headquarters of NGOs. City council sessions are held in the conference room, and weddings are also given. In the town hall cellars there is the Moras Chamber of Historical Remembrance led by a group of enthusiasts of the history of the city and the region.

The town hall was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, yet it retained its original appearance. The first destruction came with the fire of 1697. About 150 years later, the building was rebuilt. A neo-baroque tower was added at that time, which collapsed along with the roof during World War II.

After another reconstruction, the town hall was the seat of the city authorities, and then the museum of Johann Gotfried Herder. Renovations in 2003-2006 led him to its current state. The two Napoleonic cannons, once a trophy for the Prussian army, were also renovated.

A small curiosity is the fact that Zbigniew Nienacki in the Morąsko town hall decided to put one of the threads of his novel "Mr. Samochodzik i Niewidzialni"
