Jan Gotfryd Herder Museum

Local name: Muzeum im. Jana Gotfryda Herdera

The largest part of the museum's exhibitions is dedicated to German philosopher Herder who spent the first 18 years of his life in Morąg. It consists of Dutch paintings from the 17th century, portraits of members of szlachta dynasties, and also an art of the Duchy of Prussia. Expositions showing apartments of magnates are presented in four halls. The facility is a branch of the Museum of Warmia and Masuria in Olsztyn.

The museum is located in the 16th-century former palace of the Dohn Family. It was the main headquarters where meetings of its members were organized. It also consisted of the family archives, library, and housed funds.

The building was significantly destroyed by the Red Army during World War II. It was rebuilt between 1975 and 1985, and one year later a branch of the museum was opened here. Since that time it didn't regain its original look. Only basic features of the palace remained. Most of the characteristics of the design of Hindersin, court architect of the Dohn Family, were ignored.
