Markowice Sanctuary is famous for its Gothic figure of Mother of God with the Child which value is especially high for Catholics who believe in its miraculous power. Its shelter is the church, with Baroque design and equipment, built in 1710. There are also monumental monastic buildings and the beautiful field altar next to the church. The area is overgrown with trees and shrubs what makes a great place for strolls.
The miraculous figure was made in 1470 in Trzebnica. It passed to the Norbertines in Strzelno and then, in 1630, was brought to Markowice in order to save its inhabitants from the great plague. The room it was stored inside the palace of owners of Markowice has eventually become its chapel. When the daughter of the owners was healed, they founded the first wooden church for the figure. In 1921, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate arrived in Markowice, moved in the buildings of the Carmelite monastery and took over care of Markowice Sanctuary. In 1965, Cardinale Stefan Wyszyński performed a coronation of the figure and titled it "Queen of Love and Peace, Lady of Kujawy". The renovated church serves today as a pilgrimage destination.Less
