Designed at the end of the 17th century, the palace nowadays functions as a hotel and gastronomical facility. The museum also operates in its premises, that presents a collection of palace interiors in the main palace and temporary exhibitions. The magnificent mansion was designed by an outstanding architect Stanisław Zawadzki, the designer of many other palaces in Greater Poland.
The composition of the Skórzewscy family's building was based on the design of the famous Villa Rotonda near Vicenza, designed by the Italian architect Andrea Palladio. The palace is a two-storey building with a high ground floor, created on a square plan with a rotunda hall in the centre reaching up to the roof and topped with a dome with the silhouette of Atlas lifting the Earth. On the front side, a wide staircase leads to the interior, and the facade is decorated with an eight-column portico. In the copings of four porticos on each side of the building there are coats of arms of founders. The building of the palace was completed in 1800, but the detail works had been completing for next few years. In the interiors there are many bas-reliefs and a figural frieze in the round hall presenting important events from the history of Poland. Attention is also attracted by the beautiful mosaic floor made of multi-colored wood.Less
