Located by the Biskupińskie Lake, the open-air museum occupies the 2-hectares island - former settlement of the Lusatian culture. It consists of the precisely reconstructed rampart, breakwater, gate, streets, and residential buildings. The interiors of houses have traditional equipment. The exposition is complemented by the exhibition dedicated to the history of Biskupin which is presented in the museum's pavilion.
Cultural events are frequently organized in the area while the annual archeological festive takes place in the third week of September. The open-air museum also offers lessons of pottery, jewelry making, Hieroglyph, weaving, and spinning. Trips on the lake on a deck of the reconstructed boat are also available. The remains of the former settlement in Biskupin were discovered in the 1940s by teacher Walenty Szwajcer during a school trip. The discovered remains are the largest archaeological site in Europe. They do not only have a historical value but also are used for research and experiments. The farm and cultivation of several plant species in the museum also serve scientific purposes. The whole space covers the area of 23ha. It was estimated that the settlement dates back to 738-737 B.C.What is interesting is the fact that reconstructed buildings are replaced once in a while in order to update their look and equipment.Less
