Wielka Śnieżna Cave
Local name: Jaskinia Wielka Śnieżna
Wielka Śnieżna Cave is the biggest and the deepest cave in Poland. It is also the second in length cave in the whole Tatra Mountains (just behind Cień Księżyca Cave). The known part has about 24km in length but there are still places that have yet to be explored. It consists of five caves: Śnieżna, Wielka Litworowa, Nad Kotlinami, Jasny Awen and Wilcza. A number of passages are vertical in nature. Apart from that, large wells and numerous water strings can be found here.
Entries to the cave are located in Mała Łąka Valley, Miętusia Valley (but more precisely, in Litworowa Valley), while waters exit through Lodowe Źródło karst spring.Śnieżna Cave, main and the most important part of the entire complex, was discovered in 1959. One year later, the first Polish expedition was organized, and two years later - first foreign. Both were focused on exploration. The rest of the caves had been discovered and exploried at different times. It turned out later, that they form one, coherent whole. Wielka Śnieżna Cave is one of the most popular places among Polish speleologists. It's here, where debutants come through the so-called trial of fire.Less
