City walls

Local name: Mury obronne

The Gorzów defensive walls are a fragment of medieval fortifications of the length of 130.19 m and average height of 4.5 m. In the restored fragment you can see four original shell towers, advanced in front of the line of walls and in the form of rectangles.

The 13th and 14th centuries are considered to be the period of the rise of the city walls of Gorzów. The walls were erected on a stone platform, and the entire structure was made of stone and brick. At the base of the walls are about 90-140 cm thick, slightly tapered up where their thickness is 80-110 cm. Originally, the walls had three storeys. Up to this day their ceilings have not survived, and the lower levels have been walled up. In the preserved fragments there are no traces indicating their subsequent reconstruction.

The original assumption was Gothic and was designed to defend against the propelling weapon at that time. In the past, there was also a moat running along the walls, which is now covered with snow, and in the place of its existence there is a town square. Documents and drawings indicate that the demolition of the walls began at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the city gates were demolished in 1828. The last demolition took place in 1929.
