Skamieniałe Miasto Nature Reserve
Local name: Rezerwat przyrody Skamieniałe Miasto
Fossilized City is an inanimate nature reserve located near the town of Ciężkowice. Its name comes from fanciful rock formations, which were reminiscent of houses turned into stone and other urban buildings to the locals. The Blue Tourist Route runs through the Fossilized City. In the Scouts' Gorge there is a prepared place for campfire, and there are gastronomical facilities at the car park.
According to the legend, the Fossilized City is a city that has been turned into stone for the vicious life of its inhabitants. Individual rocks have been given names that are associated with their appearance. Therefore, there are, the Town Hall, the Upper and Lower Strongholds, the Pyramid or the Hermitage. Others took their name from similarity to animals, for example, the Badger or the Eagle. One of the rocks is devoted to Ignacy Jan Paderewski, who was the owner of a manor house in nearby Kąśna Dolna. In 1910 a plate dedicated to the battle of Grunwald was placed in the rock nearest to a parking lot.The rocks are surrounded by beech forest. The trail connecting them can be walked in about 45 minutes. In the direct vicinity of the reserve there is also the Ciężkowicki Waterfall.Less
