One of the best preserved defensive walls is the Old Town of Chełmno, running along Podmurna Street, Old Planty, Wałowa, Toruńska, Biskupia, al. May 3, Water. Several towers and two of the five gates - Grudziądzka, also called Grubinska and Merserburska - survived.
The walls are built of erratic boulders and bricks retaining gothic, vedic and block style. The history of the town walls of Chełmno dates back to the 13th century, but periodic expansion and elevation was recorded until 1620, when the Chelmno Gate was rebuilt. After the Swedish wars the walls were still repaired until the 19th century, and the first demolition work took place between 1860 and 1870. At that time, the remaining gates and part of the walls south of the Grudziądz Gate disappeared.
Preserved bastions are of various forms - quadrangular, semicircular, open and closed. Arranged irregularly indicates places more vulnerable to attacks. The Maiden Tower, the Powder Tower, the rectangular tower at the Dominican Monastery, and the round tower at the Holy Spirit Church are best preserved.
