Chełmińska Gate Museum

Local name: Muzeum Brama Chełmińska

The perfectly-preserved and impressive Teutonic gate from the 14th century is a headquarters of the Gallery of Contemporary Art operating under the aegis of the Regional Museum in Brodnica. There is also the small tenement house next to the gate where temporary exhibitions and meetings of the Archeology Department are organized.

The gate, often called Kamienna, was built in 1340 as a part of the city walls allowing entering Brodnica. In the 19th century, this 3-story construction served as a city prison and, after its liquidation, a weigh house - a building with scales, weights and measuring instruments used by merchants. Since 1973, it operated as a museum.

At present, the construction is a result of the partial rebuilt from 1898 when stepped tops and the portcullis were reconstructed. Characteristic elements of the gate are semicircular, plastered blendes, wooden ceilings, and the gabled roof. The part of the neck also survived to this day.
