Teutonic castle in Radzyń Chełmiński
Local name: Zamek krzyżacki w Radzyniu Chełmińskim
The Chełmno Teutonic Castle in Radzyń consists of partly reconstructed ruins located on a completely flat terrain. Thanks to its location, the castle is not visible from a greater distance. The building looks particularly beautiful at night because of the special lighting installed here.
The brick stronghold was built in the 13th century, replacing the wood and earth castle belonging to the Mazovian principality. The castle was repeatedly invaded, hence the need to build a stronghold. In 1231 it was handed over to the Teutonic Knights. The original castle had a three-part structure, consisting of a proper castle, a southern and an eastern outer castles. The building repeatedly passed between Teutonic and Polish hands until Swedish invasions, during which the castle walls were seriously damaged. In the 18th century, the remains of the stronghold were converted into Prussian offices and the chapel was restored. From 1776 on, the building was abandoned, and the walls were demolished in order to obtain building material. It started to be under protection only at the end of the 19th century.Currently, the facility is leased by a private owner and regularly renewed. The Polish movie "Pan Samochodzik i Templariusze" was shot in the castle in Radzyń.Less
