Bohoniki Mosque

Local name: Meczet w Bohonikach

Bohoniki Mosque is one of the five open mosques in Poland. It is also one of the two buildings of that type in Podlaskie Voivodeship. It was built at the turn of the 20th century in the place of the previous Muslim church which burnt.

The simple building of the mosque was constructed on a rectangular plan. Its facade is brown but it was green in the past. The church is covered with clapboards. Its pavilion roof is topped by the onion-shaped tower with a gilded crescent.

The interior is divided into three parts. The first - vestibule - is a place where visitors have to leave their shoes because it is prohibited to come further with them on. The next two are male and female parts which entrances are in the vestibule. The bigger male part consists of a minbar - a pulpit where imam preaches - and a mihrab - a niche pointing towards Mekka.

The smaller part of the mosque belongs to women. Both parts are divided by a wooden partition with a vertical crack covered by a transparent curtain which allows watching the prayer in the female part.

The walls inside the mosque are also covered with clapboards. They are decorated with depictions of vines and muhirs - citations from Koran. Colorful carpets lay on the floors.
