The Old City Hall
Local name: Het Oude Stadhuis
The Old Town Hall in The Hague is a Renaissance building erected in 1564. Currently, it is occasionally used for matters related to the royal court (e.g. announcement of the birth of princesses Catharina-Amalia and Alexia). It is also possible to enter into a civil marriage here. The magnificent edifice also has an exhibition space and a restaurant. The clock tower is also part of the town hall. The bells found here ring four times a day.
The town hall building is not only characterized by beautiful architecture, but also rooms furnished with real artistry. One can admire decorative niches carved in wood decorated with pilasters and garlands, created by carpenter Lucas Lanaken and sculptor Frederick van Tongeren. It is also worth paying attention to the richly ornamented, partly gilded decorations from 1736 - the pediment with the coats of arms of the Netherlands and the Hague, as well as a cartouche with a sword and a scale as symbols of law.
