Castle Doorwerth
Local name: Kasteel Doorwerth
Kasteel Doorwerth is a medieval castle that dates back to 1260, when the existence of a wooden defensive structure was noted here. From the fourteenth century, the stronghold was extended many times. Currently, you can see three museum exhibitions on hunting, the realities of life in the Middle Ages (based on the history of the castle) and an exhibition of paintings.
The collection of paintings is primarily a presentation of the achievements of the artists' colony, which was founded here in the nineteenth century. Among the presented works, landscape painting predominates, inspired by the picturesque areas around Oosterbeek, Wolfheze and Renkum.
The castle is surrounded by a beautifully maintained garden with many monumental trees. One of them is the monumental robinia - one of the oldest trees in the Netherlands, whose trunk has a circumference of 7 meters.
