Castle Doornenburg
Local name: Kasteel Doornenburg
The medieval castle located on the northern outskirts of the town of Doornenburg is one of the region's greatest attractions. The building is open to the public. You can enter the courtyard for free, but the interior of the castle is only available during a guided tour. The exhibition presents life in the Middle Ages. Visitors pass through the bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms as well as the armory. In the attic, however, there is an exhibition dedicated to the popular television series "Floris", which was shot here.
The beginnings of the stronghold date back to the 13th century, when it was built in the place of a wooden fortified stronghold. The castle was inhabited until the 19th century, but it was gradually deteriorating and declining. During World War II, the building was occupied by the Germans and completely destroyed as a result of Allied air raids. Immediately after the war, however, began its reconstruction. Currently, it is one of the best preserved buildings of this type in the country.
