St. Lucian's Tower
St. Lucian's Tower is currently the seat of the Malta Aquaculture Research Center - an organization dealing with the development of industrial fish farming. In the past, the tower (also called Fort St. Lucjan and Fort Roahan) was an important defense point on the coast of Malta - the second largest, after Saint Thomas Tower, watchtower in Malta.
St. Lucian's Tower is a polygonal fort and a fortified observation tower built during the reign of the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, Alof de Wignacourt. It is one of five towers built in the years 1610–1611. At the beginning of the 18th century, an artillery battery was installed in it. The building was rebuilt in subsequent centuries, resulting in the polygonal nature of the fort.
Wignacourt's successors, Grand Masters Juan de Lascaris-Castellar and Martin de Redin, also built watchtowers, but much smaller in size. Wignacourt's towers enabled not only observation, but also shelter and effective defense.
