Next to Vilnius, the Utena district is one of the regions most visited by tourists in Lithuania. almost 1/3 of its territory is covered by forests. There are over 1,000 lakes here, and the biggest attraction of the area is the Auksztocki National Park.
The area surrounding the city of Uciana was shaped by the action of a glacier. Thanks to it, postglacial moraine hills and numerous lakes of various shapes were created. There is the deepest lake in Lithuania, Lake Tauragnas, and the longest, lake Asveja. The lakes are connected by rivers, which makes it a great place for water tourism.
The region is one of the least populated areas of Lithuania. Cities are small and do not exceed 40,000 residents. Until the beginning of the 21st century, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant operated in the city of Wisaginia, but it was shut down.
Tourist attractions in the Uencian district include the only astronomical observatory in Malat in Lithuania, the Horse Museum in Oniksztach and the Museum of Beekeeping in Strypjek.
