The Telsz district covers the areas of histoic Samogitia. It is a lowland land with a glacial landscape, with a lot of lakes. On its territory there is the Żmudzki National Park and the historical cities of Telsze and Płuniany.
The landscapes of northern Lithuania were shaped by ice sheets. Thanks to this, the area is very varied, full of small moraine hills and lakes. A large part of the district is covered with mixed forests. The Samogitian National Park was created here, where numerous hiking and cycling routes were marked out. Some lakes are available for tourists, on which you can go canoeing and kayaking.
The capital of the district is the city of Telsze, which since the 17th century was leased by the Sapieha family. They founded a baroque Bernardine monastery and a church, which since 1926 has served as a cathedral. Another attraction of the city is the open-air museum of Samogitian construction.
The area of today's Telsz County belonged to the Ogiński family until 1921. Their neo-renaissance palace surrounded by a romantic landscape park with a copy of the Vecchio Palace from Florence is located in Pługniany. Currently, the palace houses the Museum of Samogitian Art. The remains of the second Ogiński residence are located in picturesque Płótelach.
