Nymphaeum Archaeological Park

Local name: Nymphaeum Archaeological Park

The archaeological park covers the area of a fairly well-preserved Roman nymphaeum, i.e. a pavilion built around a water source. The building dates from the second century. There was probably a 3 m deep pool with an area of 600 m2. Currently, after partial restoration, it houses stage and exhibition space.

The Nimfeum was once a two-story, octagonal building and a symmetrical shape, measuring about 68 m in length. The building was richly decorated with sculptures, mosaics and statues. The second floor consisted of three spacious apses, whose height reached 12 m. Along them ran two rows of niches, where most probably also stood statues. The apse was topped with hemispheres that did not survive to modern times and probably collapsed during one of the earthquakes in the early Middle Ages.
