The palace complex is located within the Citadel. It was built in the VII or VIII century during the Umayyad dynasty. During its construction, the remains of Roman buildings were used. Currently, you can visit its interior, including the restored entrance chamber.
The plan and architecture of the complex are different from other desert palaces in Jordan. The whole consists of three main areas. The first is an open space that allows large gatherings. A water tank with a diameter of 17.5 m and a depth of up to 5 m stands here. In the second part there is a decorated hall, built on the foundation of a Byzantine church, which served as an entrance hall. Finally, the third part is nine independent buildings, currently in a state of ruin.
In its heyday, the palace was used as an administrative center and the residence of the Governor of the Jordanian Territory. In the following centuries he was occupied by representatives of subsequent invaders, including Mameluks and Fatimids.
