The archaeological museum is located on a hill within the Citadel. The collected collections include finds from archaeological sites in Jordan, from prehistoric times up to the 15th century. Among them are everyday objects, jewelry and a collection of statuettes and statues. You can also see a collection of historical coins.
The most important and interesting exhibits include the Neolithic statues of Ain Ghazal, which are considered the earliest known statues depicting human figures. Their creation dates back to the years 8700 - 8500 BC. In the museum you can also see the monumental, anthropomorphic sarcophagus from the Iron Age, derived from excavations in Amman and statues from the temple of Khirbet et-Tannur.
The museum building was designed by the British architect Austen Harrison, who also designed the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem, formerly operating as the Palestinian Archaeological Museum.
