Roman amphitheater built in the 1st century AD It is one of the largest such buildings in Italy and is most likely the work of the same architect who designed the Roman Colosseum. In 305, five Christians were executed in the arena of the amphitheater, including the patron saint of Naples, St. Januarius. Today, the arena, surrounded by rows of seats, and some arcades surrounding it, have survived from the building.
