Manzoni Residence

Local name: Casa del Manzoni

The historic Milan residence of Casa Manzoni is known mainly as the home of the famous Italian writer of the Romantic era - Alessandro Manzoni. His most famous work is the novel I Promessi Sposi, which is considered the most-read book in Italian. The artist bought the building in 1813 and lived there with his family until his death in 1873. The house dates from the 18th century. It was rebuilt in 1864 by the architect Andrea Boni in a richly decorated Neo-Renaissance style. The original appearance of the rooms from that period has survived to the present day. Visitors can see the layout of the rooms, furniture, furnishings and decorations in line with Manzoni's private lifestyle. In addition, the palace houses the Centro Nazionale di Studi Manzoniani, which protects and disseminates the private Manzini library of over 38,000 books.
