In 1252, the first wooden bridge was built here, which in 1569 was replaced with a stone structure, which was designed by Bartolomeo Ammanati. The building was created to celebrate the capture of Siena by Kosma and Medici. Today's bridge is a faithful reconstruction of a 16th-century monument that the Germans blew up in 1944.
