It is the largest of four former royal residences, built for the Bourbon dynasty. It was the largest building erected in the 18th century in Europe. In 1996 the palace together with the park, Vanvitelli aqueduct and San Leucio ensemble, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
