Sanctuary of Oropa

The Marian sanctuary was created because of the Black Madonna - a figure made of black wood, the author of which is, in accordance with the tradition of St. Luke the Evangelist. Already in the Middle Ages it had its own church, and then in the 17th century the Old Basilica, which still exists today, was built. In the years 1885-1960, the monumental, 80 m high Basilica was built.
