County Limerick is located in western Ireland at the mouth of the country's largest river, Shannon. It is an agricultural region whose main monuments are centered around the capital of the Limerick region and the small, charming village of Adare.
The city of Limerick was founded by the Vikings and developed in the Middle Ages and subsequent centuries as an important trade center. Today it is the island's third largest city. Its main monument is the monumental, Gothic King John's Castle. You can also see a few old churches here, but the downtown is built up mainly with buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, i.e. from the time of the industrial boom.
Almost in the center of the county is the village of Adare. It is considered the most beautiful city of Ireland. Many, now restored, colorful thatched huts have been preserved here that surround the flower-filled gardens. The village can also boast of a gothic abbey of tynaria and a 12th century castle.
In the area around Adare you can visit a theme park related to Celtic culture. In the extensive gardens you can admire copies of dolmens, stone circles, sacred wells, as well as early Christian buildings. To see the original megalithic buildings, one should go to the east of the region, to Lake Gur to the local archaeological park.
