Ennis Cathedral

The neo-Gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Peter and Paul with its majestic tower is a symbol of the city. There you can see the rich interior of the church, the beautiful main altar, as well as the famous organ built in 1930 by the Evans and Barr company.

The church was built according to the design of Dominic Madden in the 19th century for the parish in Ennis. The first Holy Mass was celebrated there in 1842, and the dedication of the church to Saints Peter and Paul took place in 1843. During the Great Famine, further work on the building was stopped. Only in 1874 it was completely finished. In 1890, the church became the seat of the bishop.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the limestone building was renovated, and then cloisters were added to its structure. In the 70s of the twentieth century there was a reconstruction adapting the building to the requirements of the Second Vatican Council. In 1996 the interior of the cathedral was renovated.
