The Spire of Dublin is the unofficial name of the Monument of Light spire. It is a 120 meter high stainless steel monument, placed on the site previously occupied by Nelson's Column. At the foot, the spire is 3 meters wide, and at the very tip it narrows to just 15 centimeters. At dusk, the base of the monument is illuminated, and at its top, the illumination from 12,000 holes is turned on.
The spire was designed by Ian Ritchie Architects. The design was to reflect "elegant and dynamic simplicity combining art and technology." The first part of the monument was installed in 2002. The erection of the entire sculpture was delayed due to difficulties in obtaining a building permit and environmental regulations.
The spire consists of eight hollow stainless steel cones, the longest of which is 20 meters long. It also has two massive shock absorbers to counteract rocking.
