St. Peter's Church

Saint Peter's Church in Drogheda is in the city center. It is a Roman Catholic temple and the national shrine of Saint Oliver Plunkett. The church was built in the neo-Gothic style. It is modeled on French thirteenth-century cathedrals.

The church was built in 1884. It stands on the site of an earlier, much smaller temple. Limestone mined in the area was used for the construction. It is a three-nave building with a transept. At the façade there is a tall, square tower with a spire. The facade is decorated with a rosette with a stained glass window. There are three doors with a carved portal leading to the interior.

The interior of the church is covered with a roof with a visible structure. The semicircular closed chancel is covered with mosaics. Every year crowds of pilgrims come to the church. In the side chapel there are relics of Saint Oliver Plunkett, a Catholic archbishop murdered during the persecution in the 17th century. The saint's head rests in a richly decorated reliquary.
