Ben Bulben - 526 m
Ben Bulben is a mountain in County Sligo, in the Dartra Mountains. It has a characteristic shape resembling a hat. On the northern side, its slopes are very steep and rocky, and on the south, it is gentle and grassy. It is a popular hiking destination.
The name Ben Bulben comes from a Gaelic term meaning "jaw-shaped rock". It refers to the characteristic limestone "teeth" located on the northern side of the hill. The mountain has been present in Irish fairy tales and legends for centuries. The surrounding area is sometimes called the Land of Yeats because the poet often spent summers here with his grandparents, and the local stories and landscapes were an inspiration for his work. Ben Bulben appears in it, among others.
Ben Bulben is 526 meters above sea level. Its foothills are almost at sea level. Consequently, the treble appears to be much higher than it actually is. The trails leading to the vast, flattened peak are on the southern side of the mountain. The entrance from the north is very steep and dangerous. It is also exposed to very strong gusts of wind blowing from the Atlantic.
