SELFOSS tourist attractions

Selfoss lies on the south coast of Iceland and is an important agricultural and industrial center of the island. Although its history dates back to the ninth century, no significant monuments have survived. Thanks to its location, the city is an important stop for tourists following the road around Iceland.

The name Selfoss can be misleading because it means "waterfall". The cascade of the same name is located in the northern part of Iceland. It is not known exactly where it came from to describe this city, where one of the island's largest rivers flows, but it is completely flat and does not create waterfalls.

The mouth of the Olsfusa River into the sea means that Selfoss lies in a deeply indented bay, not on the exposed sea shore. Thanks to this, agriculture and agricultural processing could develop here since the Middle Ages.

Today, tourists coming to the village during a trip around Iceland have at their disposal hiking trails up the river with views of the nearby bare mountain slopes. In winter it is a good place for cross-country skiing.
