Öræfi is a region in southeastern Iceland located at the foot of the Vatnajökull glacier and glacial lagoon. It is an area often visited by tourists due to its beautiful scenery and the possibility of trekking on the glacier.
In Öræfi there are several small towns with guest houses, chalets for rent and camping. Tourists come here mainly due to the proximity of the Vatnajökull glacier. It is open to the public, but it is best to go on the trail with a guide who knows the crevices and safe passages between the clefts.
Öræfi's top attractions include the 1.5-hour Fjallsárlón Iceberg boat trips around the glacial lagoon. Huge fragments of ice float on the waters here, which when properly lit by the sun takes on an intensely blue color. When visiting Öræfi, you can also see many beautiful landscapes. These include the rocky Cape Stokksnes and the Hvannadalshnúkur peak towering over the green plain.
