Laugarvatn is a tourist destination on the route of the Golden Circle. It is situated on Lake Laugarvatn, in the vicinity of the famous Gaysir and Strokkur geysers. One of the most famous thermal baths in Iceland is located here.
The history of the settlement is inextricably linked with the Héraðsskólinn boarding school, built here in 1928. Farms were built around it, where the staff initially lived. Today, the historic school building is turned into a hotel.
Tourists come to Laugarvatn because of the hot springs here. The Thermae Fontana Laugarvatn, located by the lake, is often compared to the Blue Lagoon next to Reykjavik. They provide not only the possibility of swimming in thermal pools, but also access to saunas and culinary attractions, such as traditionally baked in hot sand.
The main attractions of the Laugarvatn area are mainly geysers. There are two of the most famous on the island, the famous Geysir, from which the whole phenomenon takes its name, and Geyser Strokkur and Geyser Blesi. The area also offers beautiful views of the nearby mountains and many waterfalls, the most famous of which is Bruarfoss Waterfall.
