The capital region includes the Suðurnes Peninsula with the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. It is the smallest and most densely populated region of the country in which 2/3 of its population lives.
The capital's main attraction and tourist center is Reykjavik. It is the largest city in the country in which the most important museums are concentrated, including the Icelandic History Museum. Above the low buildings there is a huge block of granite Hallgrímskirkja church with a tower 73 m high.
The region includes the island of Viðey, located about 700 m from the coast. Several buildings and stones with runic inscriptions have been preserved on it. You can also see the Imagine Peace Tower light monument and basalt milestones erected in 1990 by Richard Serr.
The area around Reykjavik is used for active tourism. Many hiking trails have been marked out here, and in the winter - ski trails. For people who do not want to venture deep into Iceland in the winter, it is also a popular place to observe the northern lights.
