Heptapyrgion of Thessalonica
Local name: Επταπύργιο Θεσσαλονίκης
Built by the Byzantines, and expanded in Turkish times, the fortress in Thessaloniki. Rises on the site of the former Acropolis. It is a stone building with ten defensive towers. It survived in very good condition because from the end of the 19th century it served as a prison for almost 100 years. Currently there are offices of the antiquity depatament.
