Since 1938, the massif of the highest peak of Greece has been protected by a national park, and in 1981 it was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The park covers the entire area of the massif from the forested foothills to the rocky peak. Several dozen kilometers of hiking trails have been marked out in the park. There are also tourist hostels and designated resting places.
